The book has been influential in the scout movement, whose founder, Robert Baden-Powell, was a friend of Kipling's. Critics such as Swati Singh have noted that even critics wary of Kipling for his supposed imperialism have admired the power of his storytelling. The Jungle Book has remained popular, partly through its many adaptations for film and other media. Critics have also noted the essential wildness and lawless energies in the stories, reflecting the irresponsible side of human nature. They teach respect for authority, obedience, and knowing one's place in society with "the law of the jungle", but the stories also illustrate the freedom to move between different worlds, such as when Mowgli moves between the jungle and the village. Another important theme is of law and freedom the stories are not about animal behaviour, still less about the Darwinian struggle for survival, but about human archetypes in animal form. The theme is echoed in the triumph of protagonists including Rikki-Tikki-Tavi and The White Seal over their enemies, as well as Mowgli's. The stories are set in a forest in India one place mentioned repeatedly is "Seonee" ( Seoni), in the centralĪ major theme in the book is abandonment followed by fostering, as in the life of Mowgli, echoing Kipling's own childhood. Most of the characters are animals such as Shere Khan the tiger and Baloo the bear, though a principal character is the boy or "man-cub" Mowgli, who is raised in the jungle by wolves. With reduced water levels, food sources (both herbivore and carnivore supplies). The Jungle Book (1894) is a collection of stories by the English author Rudyard Kipling. The levels of the water pools start to drop dramatically. All it takes is one extra-hot and long summer, and the jungle's life-giving resources become scarce. The severity and length of the season mean the expected seasonal rains do not come.Īn extreme drought takes hold. This summer turns into an extremely long, hot and dry one. And this year-the year of Mowgli's big adventure -something devastating happens. We see the colours of the jungle change from their initial deep green and pops of bright colour to a dry and desiccated palette of browns and khaki greens. The jungle doesn't remain as luxuriant and life-giving as we first see it for too long. Akela and she-wolf Raksha (Lupita Nyong'o) then raised the boy as if he were one of their own cubs. The panther, knowing that a man-cub this small wouldn't live long if he was left alone, brought the tiny boy to Akela's (Giancarlo Esposito) wolf pack. We soon learn that back when he was a toddler, Mowgli was found alone in the jungle by black panther Bagheera (voiced by Ben Kingsley). But his man-advantage doesn't last long: as he tries to swing in a dead tree, the brittle branches break, dumping Mowgli on the ground. Determined to win the race, Mowgli uses one of his 'tricks'-he uses his arms to swing through the trees, something the wolf-cubs cannot do. We meet Mowgli as he is racing through the lush and brilliantly coloured jungle with his wolf-cub siblings.

Only Mowgli (played by Neel Sethi) is live-action everything else, including the luscious backdrops and landscapes, is animated. The 2016 version is also cinematically significant-Favreau's film uses a hyperreal form of digital animation to create the jungle world. The musical numbers and the comedy have been stripped back, while the dramatic elements of the story are brought to the foreground. In Favreau's version, which is also a Disney production, the narrative has been adapted from both the Kipling stories and the previous film version. In 1967, Disney released an animated musical comedy version of the story, directed by Wolfgang Reitherman and featuring a singing sloth bear and a jazz-performing primate. Mowgli's coming-of-age tale (and the anthropomorphised, speaking jungle animals that he interacts with) first appeared in the 1890s in a collection of short stories by Rudyard Kipling, which was published as The Jungle Book. The 2016 film version of The Jungle Book, directed by Jon Favreau, brings the story of Mowgli-the man-cub raised by a pack of Indian wolves-to a new generation.

When Disney updated the classic story of Mowgli and his animal peers earlier this year, audiences were not only treated to a spectacular display of CGI, but also presented with many timely lessons about growing up, the sanctity of the environment and the importance of being true to who you are, writes CAROLYN LESLIE.
